ANNUAL MEETING IN COVENTRY, July 2009 The CPD session theme was 'Chronic disease management'. Speakers from wide variety of specialties gave invaluable talk to kemcolians. Special address was made by Dr Hasan Bukhari on his unique project 'APPNA Sehat'.
ANNUAL MEETING IN COVENTRY, July 2008
Graduates of King Edward Medical College for over five decades gathered in the leafy surroundings of Hinckley village for their 10th Annual meeting on 12th July 2008 at the Sketchley Grange Hotel. As before the day started with an educational symposium which was followed by an enthusiastic Annual General Body Meeting and a colourful gala evening and dinner.
The theme this year was “Recent Advances in Clinical Practice” and approved for three CPD credits by the Royal College of Physicians, London.
Dr Sajid Khan, Consultant Respiratory Physician from Barnet Hospital London started the proceedings with a common but difficult to treat symptom of cough and gave insight in its less virulent simple cough of pharyngitis to most serious causes such as lung cancer.
Professor Qasim Aziz, from St Mary’s College and the Barts - London NHS Trust, gave a delightful presentation on his well renowned research work on “Brain Gut interactions in health and disease”. His talk provided an insight in the mysterious relationship of brain and gut and recent advances in the management of gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome.
Dr Mahmood Adil informed the audience about his “North to North Partnership”- a well organized and dedicated work, with co operation of Department of Health UK to facilitatetransfer of health technology and clinical expertise to some needy areas of Pakistan.
Dr Tanzeem Raza, Consultant Physician from Bournemouth, shared his experience about applying and winning the “NHS Clinical Excellence Awards”.Dr Reza Dar, Consultant A&E, Nottingham shed light on “CV writing and Interview skills for Junior Doctors”
Dr Javed Mansoor Ahmed, Consultant Cardiologist, Newcastle illustrated recent advances in “Management of Myocardial Infarction”by showingthe life saving procedure of primary coronary angioplasty.
The talks on “Recent Advances in Vascular Surgery” by Dr Asad Rahi, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Blackburnand “Advance Laproscopic Surgery in Children” by Dr Adil Aslam, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Cambridge, were informative and well received by the audience.
The feedback about the CPD programme was positive and it seemed that the efforts made by KEMCA Scientific Committee for this well organized and informative programme were worthwhile.
ANNUAL MEETING in London, 23rd July 2007
The CPD session included a workshop on the Good Clinical Practice and Clinical Trial Regulation Training which was led by Mark Fitch and Tania Worth. The focus of the workshop was on the investigator’s responsibilities so that each individual involved in investigating in conducting a trial shall be qualified by education, training and experience to perform his/her tasks. The format of the workshop included presentations, exercises, discussion and short MCQ. The feedback of the workshop was very positive.
ANNUAL MEETING in Windsor 16th September 2006
The theme of the CPD session was “Medical Profession and Disaster Management”. The session was chaired by a fellow Kemcolian, Professor Mahmood Shaukat who is a professor in Paediatric Surgery at the Mayo Hospital and also the secretary of the Kemcolian Forum in Pakistan. He kindly accepted our invitation and was kind enough to travel all the way from Pakistan. Dr Muhammad Abid, Consultant in Communicable Diseases, Health Protection Agency UK gave an overview of the natural disasters and its impact in different populations over the last few years.
Professor Mahmood Shaukat presented the “Medical Management of the Earthquake Disaster in Pakistan”. He illustrated the details regarding the lack of preparation to tackle these disasters, both at national and local levels in Pakistan. He also described the lessons learnt from this experience. He concluded his talk by mentioning the steps which have been put in place to address these issues in future.
Dr Reza Ahmad Dar, Consultant in Emergency Medicine from Queens Hospital, Nottingham, shared his experience of arriving in Balakot soon after the earthquake. He was a part of the trauma team from the UK to arrive in disaster zone at a very early stage. He described in detail about patients who were managed by his team in very difficult circumstances, which reflected the spirit and enthusiasm of the doctors. Over 1000 patients were treated in just less than one week and 134 surgical procedures were carried out. On their return the team established a charity - the Midlands Doctors Association UK - and their aim was to establish a hospital in Balakot. It is pleasing to note that their charity has already bought a piece of land for the development of the hospital in the suburbs of Balakot.
Dr Tariq Mahmood, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist, Mayday University Hospital London, spoke about the role of politics in managing the natural disasters and use of aid to the affected areas. He also described the role of poor sanitation and damaged infrastructure to increase the gastrointestinal infections.
The CPD session concluded with an enlightening talk from Dr Rizwan Ul Hasan Consultant Anaesthetist Huntington Hospital, Cambridge: his description of his experience working as a part of trauma team visiting Kashmir and Indonesia was remarkable.
ANNUAL MEETING in Southampton – 11th September 2005
The topic of the CPD session was “Continuous Professional Development across cultures: how to influence progress of overseas doctors in the NHS” which was led by Dr Tanzeem Haider Raza and his talk included appraisal, assessment and personal development plans. Dr Majid Jalil, an Academic GP from Wessex led the discussion on “Can culture influence learning style if the adult learners, if so how? Prof Rosslynne Freeman Professor of Medical Education, lectured included the exploring factors that influence performance of overseas doctors in the assessment of performance in the UK.
APPRAISAL SKILLS COURSE in Manchester – 18th June 2005
An Appraisal Skills Course was held in Manchester which was organised by Dr Shahid Bashir. Dr Asad Rahi, a consultant vascular surgeon gave the overview of appraisal, assessment and revalidation. Dr Tajamal Khan described the update on appraisal and revalidation in general practice. Dr Hafeez gave a practical guide on the appraisal process. In the end, Dr Javed Iqbal concluded the appraisal process and how it could be used with the job planning. Feed back of the course was very positive and well received.

ANNUAL MEETING in Telford – 30th October 1999
The educational programme was chaired by Dr Ahmad Mahmood. Dr Farrukh Hashmi, an eminent Kemcolian psychiatrist gave presentation on “Depressive Illness – Asian Perspective”. His talk was very witty and informative. Dr Chaudahry a consultant cardiologist discussed the “Management of Hypertension” in view of current guidelines. In the end, Dr Stephen Cullen, a GP discussed the musculo-skeletal pain and use of Dexketprofen in general practice. Educational session was well attended and positive feedback was received.
